Why do people knock on my door when they know I am Deaf?

Although I am Deaf and have a doorbell which has flashing lights in every room, there are two people I'm finding it really hard to understand why they inisit on knocking on my door.

The first guy is a delivery guy, he claims he knows I am Deaf and he tells me he knocks loud on my door (totally not getting I can't hear him) and eventually he might press my door bell, but he often leaves a "you were out when i delivered a parcel" even though I was in.

The second in a fast-food outlet - I end up going to the door to see if he is on his way/why he's late - only to see the guy is already there him looking at me wondering why it took so long for me to answer the door. He never ever presses the doorbell. For the take-away, do Chinese people not have, or refuse to use a door-bell? Any ideas as to what the character for doorbell is that I can put next to it for him? How can I better explain that I know you've pressed the doorbell because of the flashing light - i've even had a light installed near the front door, so people can still see it flashing when I answer.

I've tried not getting any parcels but I enjoy the take-away food too much and I'm not sure how much English he knows, which is why I'd like to know the character for doorbell to put on my doorbell for him.

Ok, there are other people who press the button, while I'm out "hear" nothing and incorrectly assume my doorbell doesn't work (despite there is much flashing in the rooms in the house) and on other visits, knock thinking the doorbell still doesn't work - when of course it does! But by knocking not doorbell pressing, I don't know they are there - there have been a few embarassing moment when I've been leaving my house, but there is someone at the door who hasn't pressed the doorbell, I'm on my way out and they think I've answering the door.

I just can't win - what can I do??Why do people knock on my door when they know I am Deaf?
Put a sign on your door. DO NOT KNOCK, you are wasting your time. RING BELL.
Well all in all, I think I'm in for some cold Chinese and no parcels. I think I'm gonna use more sign language when I answer the door!!

Hopefully Chinese guy will figure it out and the parcel delivery companies, gas and electricity meter readers etc etc etc

Obviously they're just not that bright, or they don't get that you're deaf, not just partially deaf. But other people have already given you some good (and funny solutions) though :)
Maybe is you show them the lights they will understand how it works. Why do people knock on my door when they know I am Deaf?
Print out a colorful and bright sign with a big arrow pointing to the doorbell saying 'PLEASE PRESS THIS'

Make it really obvious too so if takeaway person cannot speak/read English, he can get the gist.
I've heard that there are dogs trained to help the Deaf. If the door is knocked, if the telephone is ringing, etc., the dog will come to you and you follow the dog to where the sound is.

If that isn't a good YouTube, then try a different video.

If that wasn't good advice, then I wouldn't know what else to recommend.
Put an ear w/ a slash going across it or an x~that is the universal language for deafness. A suitable disabled sign might even be manufactured. Put it on the door. Put a sign telling people that you have flashing lights to tell you when the doorbell is pressed. This might be manufactured. Check the pharmacy or home heath store for information, they might be able to help you if you explain. The delivery man must think you are hard of hearing or else he's just plain busy and forgets. The food guy is ignorant/retarded/0r just plain rude. If anybody knocks when the signs are out there, they are ignorant just like that guy. I limp and sometimes I get to the door after a long time. People are 'inconvinienced."(:%26lt;!0:)
I like the sign idea for take out. You could make something that you only hang on the door when you're waiting for a food delivery. It should be large and on neon green or pink paper at about eye level. (You might also want to tell him you're going to tip him less when he doesn't ring the bell. If he notices that his tips improve when he remembers, he'll remember more often.)

As for packages I certainly wouldn't want to have to leave a large neon sign on my door all the time, but if you have the tracking information for the delivery that will help you guess what day you'll need to put it out.

The only other thing you could do is have your packages shipped to a post office box or a UPS store.
People in general are hesitant to press doorbells - making a loud sound in someone's house feels intrusive (which people avoid, for the most part) and half the time, the doorbell doesn't work. Knocking is just more efficient, the go-to option.

That being said, unless you've straight-up told these people that you're deaf multiple times (I bet you don't get the same Chinese food delivery guy every time...) then you're gonna have to not expect them to know. They deal with tons of people and tons of houses every day, in a fast-paced and completely stressed atmosphere, so you can't really blame them if they forgot you're "the deaf one."

If you want people to knock, either cover your door in some foamy material (or something that would mute sound, forcing them to ring instead) or like the first user said, put a sign up.
people have no common sense---they insist its important to teach calculus and shakespeare---but people don't know how to think about basic life situations..

my door bell is broken--its a common issue--especially with older homes--i have taped over my bell---but they still ring it and stand there and then leave--common sense tells you if no one respoonds to one method--especially one that could be malfunctioning---try the other
You too! We have same problem like that for years!!!!

Be careful getting strangers knowing you鈥檙e deaf living in your home. You can try painting bright color around door bell push button if doorbells not noticeable.

We have small dogs to alert us of someone knocking the door which is much better.

The paint can be a bright neon color which helps people notice it.

And perhaps having your door decorated with seasoned wreaths or anything that pretty much covers almost the area where people tends to knock on the door making them use the door bell push button!
people knock because that's instinct , give the delivery guy a note and tell him that you cant hear him knock and to please ring the bell. try making the door bell stand out more, make people want to push the button, maybe make it a big red button, everyone loves to press those.
Try posting a note on the door please press doorbell. Try going down to the Delivery office and explaining in person that whoever delivers your packages should be informed before delivery that they have to ring your bell. We tried that with my sister in law who is deaf and haven't a problem since. A delivery guy showed her that the office had placed a note on her packages indicating that whoever delivered the package was to press the doorbell and wait for her to open the door, not knock on the door.
