Failed glucose test, Ketone in urine?

I am very concerned and could use some experience in all this. I went in on Wednesday for my 4 week appointment and had my glucose test (at 28 weeks, 5 days). I had gained a whopping 9 lbs and also for the first time, had some sugar detected in my urine. My doctor asked me if I had anything sweet the night before and I had had some cookies. She didn't seem too concerned, however, she was about the sudden weight gain and referred me to a dietician. I eat very healthy during the week and occasionally give in on the weekends (Chinese food, bacon egg %26amp; cheese on bagels).

I went into my doctor's office today because I believed I had developed a UTI so they checked my urine and found I did have "a little something there" as well as it was showing I was slightly dehydrated. The nurse said it's nothing i should be concerned about, but I drink water CONSTANTLY. When my doctor called me later on, she shared with me that I had traces of Ketone in my urine and I just failed the glucose test (had to get a 135 or lower, I got a 136).

I am not overweight in the least and have always been naturally skinny (on the lower end of average, bordering on an underweight BMI). My mother and I both have hypoglycemia but no history of diabetes. Not only am I terrified I have Gestational Diabetes (I don't want to have a C-section), but I've read up on Ketone in urine and studies have shown it can result in children with lower IQ's and various other developmental problems and/or delays. My doctor didn't seem too concerned and said as long as I get the 3 hour glucose test done within this month, that's fine. With all the things I've read up on Gestational Diabetes and Ketone levels, I'm terrified and very confused how this isn't considered more urgent. I mean, I would think drinking plenty of water and still being dehydrated is very bad for the baby and means she's not getting proper nutrients so something should be done quickly to fix that.

Sorry this is so long; I'm just really worried and confused. Any personal experiences or specific knowledge on this would be extremely helpful. Also, if you did have these problems while pregnant, did it affect your child's IQ and development? Was it still easy for you to lose weight after delivery?Failed glucose test, Ketone in urine?
My knowledge is fuzzy, my exp was 15yrs ago but lets see if it helps reassure you anyway :)

1: gestational diabetes does not = c section

2: dont stress about the finger prick test wait until you have the propper fasting test. Did you know the fingerprick test can be corruped by someting as minor as you not washing your hand properly before being pricked %26amp; any sugars on your skin mix with your blood to contaminate your result.

3; the result you recieved is only borderline, even if it is indictive of GD diet adjustments can often resulve the issue %26amp; get you back on track

4: Ketone in urine can be indictive of an infection anywhere in the body so you may be comming down with the flu %26amp; just not syptomatic yet. It can also indicate a diet high in protien low in carbs or inadiquite food intake.

5: drinking 'constantly' shoud help flush your system but make sure youre not filling up on water %26amp; missing out on nutients. Sipping regularly before you feel thirsty is ideal aim for 2 to 3 litres in a 24hr period, to avoid water loading. Excessive thirst can also be a sign of diabetes.

6: The sudden excessive weight gain is something that could indicate prediabetes but again Dr has acceed with dietitian %26amp; the 3hr GTT

I had high ketones %26amp; Gdiabetes with preg #1 due to meication needed for a preexisting condidion, the meds saved my %26amp; his life but really screwed me everywhere else. He was born at 28weeks due to my condition NOT the GD or ketones. He is now 15yo in all A classes, participated in sports at elite level %26amp; no where even close to affected by my pregnancy dramas.

I did have trouble loosing after he was born but more so from the meds continuing to mess me up. My GD was uncontrollable even with insulin (well for the 3 weeks between diagnose %26amp; HAD to be born) but settled immediatly once he was born. He reached all milestones within expected timeframes some even without adjusting for his prematurity

From my memory with #2 %26amp; 3 a one off present of ketones signals investigation, if its high level this is rushed through but a one off, low reading just signals to be obsevent.

My son actually had an 'eppisode' when he was 5yo hed done a big for him sport session after dinner %26amp; came home to tired to snack, next morning I wasnt able to wake him (super freaky), he stirred on the way to the car in the rain (we were going to hospital) %26amp; said Im starving, fed him 3 weatbix with milo %26amp; a milo milk drink THEN went to hosp he was still sluggish. HIS urine tes showed high ketones, Dr said most likly from the exercise then not eating, his sugars were normal, though I know from my diabetes days from what he ate they should have been REALLY high. So anyway I think Im trying to sayis MANY things can influence both blood sugar levels %26amp; ketone readings.

Dont panic, follow dieticians %26amp; Obs advise %26amp; Im sure all will be fine. GD isnt the end of the world, just a readjustment of it

Good Luc %26amp; congrats on 28 weeks!
