Was it wrong to not give a tip?

Okay, so I just ordered chinese food and the bill was $12.45 with free delivery. I only had $15 and the food was more than I expected. So I gave him exact change and everything, no tip...

Is that really bad?

I'm only 14 so I don't really know 'tip etiquette' and all.

Thanks for helping! Was it wrong to not give a tip?
Wrong. They provided a service even it it was free delivery. I would have given him the $15 in thanks for his time and effort.
Yes. You needed to tip. I would have tipped 20% of the bill, because he did bring it to you. Most of the time, that's all those guys get paid, so he essentially brought it to you for free.

Even though delivery was free (usually they charge $5 or something if it's under a certain dollar amount), you still needed to tip the delivery guy personally.

Your total should have been $14.94 with a 20% tip and I would have just given him the $15.

I would go back to the restaurant and tip him what you should have in person. Any time anyone brings you food, you need to tip them, just as a rule in general.

If you don't have enough to offer at least a 15% tip, you shouldn't order food that requires a tip, you should go to Mcdonalds or a deli or something instead.

Also, even though there was a minimum amount for delivery, you are still supposed to tip on top of the total bill. I'm assuming she made you order more because that was the minimum purchase for free delivery, but free delivery doesn't meant that you don't have to tip the person who brought it to you-- it means that the company picks up the tab for the $5 they would have charged you for delivery in the first place. I'm sure this delivery guy was mad that you didn't tip him. Even though it wasn't your money to tip him with (were you babysitting?), it's still part of the total cost of the meal and you would have been right to use it. If you didn't want to tip or didn't have enough money, you should have gone somewhere to eat, not have someone bring it to you.

It would have been perfectly within reason to give him the whole $15.

If I were you, I would go to the restaurant and tip the person what you should have. Otherwise, remember this next time you want to order delivery food. Was it wrong to not give a tip?
Yes you should tip if they are delivering the food by 15% of the amount. You should have given him an extra $1.87 on top of the bill. That amount would have been $14.32 or given him the full $15.00!!! But if you go to pick up your food at the restaurant DO NOT tip. Even though they have a tip jar sitting there for you to put something into it.
My rule of thumb, round tot he nearest 5 or 10.

so, your bill came to 12.45?

i would have given him the 15.

if it was $17

i'd give him 20.

BUT if it was $18 or $19, just giving 20 isn't really much of a tip. I'd give him 20 and whatever small money i could find, $2, $3 would work.

see the logic here?

don't worry about crunching numbers and giving and exact percent tip. as long as it hovers around 20%, that's the going rate for a tip, you should be fine. Was it wrong to not give a tip?
Yes, you tip delivery people, at least 10%. They depend on tips and are often only paid minimum wage or less.
Some Dairy Queens allow tipping so feel free to put a tip in the jar. All employees share the wealth in their paychecks. Sometimes my grand daughter would make an extra six-seven dollars a day, an 8 hour day that is. And she was as happy as a pig in a trough knowing people cared for their service.
To many these days always expect something for nothing. 'Tipping' was created as a way of showing appreciation of a workers performance. Nowadays it is ,basically, required no matter how lousy the service. Most delivery drivers have an hourly wage they collect plus so much per mile put on their car. He was already getting paid for doing his job so I would say you were right in not tipping.
